I am sure that no one coming to this ceremony expected a High
Court judge to use the occasion to talk about that four letter word, love.

But that's a good thing. In life, never be predictable. It's so uncool.

Watership down: Story of Creation

"All the world will be your enemy, Prince of a Thousand enemies. And when they catch you, they will kill you. But first they must catch you; digger, listener, runner, Prince with the swift warning. Be cunning, and full of tricks, and your people will never be destroyed."
— Richard Adams (Watership Down)

Hey fish! Stop walking. You're not even a real quadruped.

And the quote:

Always keep Grit from being pessimistic. Avoid printing those things which distort the minds of readers or make them feel at odds with the world.
Avoid showing the wrong side of things, or making people feel discontented.
Do nothing that will encourage fear, worry, or temptation... Wherever possible, suggest peace and good will toward men.
Give our readers courage and strength for their daily tasks. Put happy thoughts, cheer, and contentment into their hearts.

Asteroid Discovery From 1980 - 2010

What follows is an excerpt from the description of the video:
Notice how the pattern of discovery follows the Earth around its orbit, most discoveries are made in the region directly opposite the Sun. You'll also notice some clusters of discoveries on the line between Earth and Jupiter, these are the result of surveys looking for Jovian moons. Similar clusters of discoveries can be tied to the other outer planets, but those are not visible in this video.

As the video moves into the mid 1990's we see much higher discovery rates as automated sky scanning systems come online. Most of the surveys are imaging the sky directly opposite the sun and you'll see a region of high discovery rates aligned in this manner.

At the beginning of 2010 a new discovery pattern becomes evident, with discovery zones in a line perpendicular to the Sun-Earth vector. These new observations are the result of the WISE (Widefield Infrared Survey Explorer) which is a space mission that's tasked with imaging the entire sky in infrared wavelengths.

Instant Elements

Check this out.

Call me weird, but I think I just saw something fairly badass.

At about the 0:33 mark in the video, you see something utterly obliterated in the bottom left quadrant of the video. It only lasts for a fraction of a second, but it looks like some kind of an impact out there. It might help to full-screen it.

The image above seems to capture whatever it is only an instant prior to impact.

...the causes of the sad death of Mr Bellamy were his manner of driving and the actions of a pedestrian he hit. I am unaware of anything I could suggest that might reduce the likelihood of young men engaging in such high risk behaviour – it is a problem that has confronted society for centuries and has been amplified more recently by the ready availability of powerful motor vehicles, drugs and alcohol.

Although I'd be doing better if I was able to secure a copy of The Passage. I've been to 5 bookstores, and it's sold out bloody everywhere.

Sigh.

Enrollments are up from last year...

[EDIT] In all (relative) seriousness, if you are mildly interested in both Starcraft and have a basic idea of game theory, the lecture is actually pretty digestible. Also, it would probably be a good idea to cut in to about 19 minutes after the opening remarks.
